This piece commemorates my grandmother. I respected her not only for her gusto for life, but also for the fact that she also made a living from her craft- she was a seamstress, and owned a bridal shop. I have fond memories baking, sewing, and celebrating with her, and so chose materials and images that I associate with her and her interests, background, and beliefs. Bridal lace and sewing patterns are embedded in the painted layers. Maps of the areas she lived in and originated from weave in and out of focus. A favorite photograph of her is transferred onto a gold leafed baking pan inset into the sculpture. A votive candle, rosary beads and prayer card reference her Catholic beliefs. Her Bohemian recipes that she passed on are scratched into the surface, and photos of her are transferred on.

Size: 60” x 18” x 10”

Materials: plaster, acrylic, sewing patterns, pincushion, bridal lace, loaf pan, gold leaf, pins, pearls, rosary, photos, bible pages, fern, maps and ink on wood.
